My daughter's well-used camp oven - ready for re-seasoning I think! Getting a bit of rust on it from not looking after it.

G'day and welcome to
the wonderful world of
Camp Oven Cooking.

My name is Ian and I live in the New England area of NSW at Kootingal, near Tamworth.

I started this site because of my love of camping and for tucker cooked outdoors. Especially when done in a Camp Oven/s, which I consider to be the most versatile piece of cooking equipment ever made. It can be used indoors or outdoors - just as happy on a gas stove as it is on a campfire.

Historically speaking I've had trouble finding decent camping cooking gear and most of the sites that I've visited, look and feel "too busy" to keep my attention. So I'll see if I can keep it a bit simpler and logical. There's a lot of camp ovens and camp cooking gear out there (mostly inferior Asian stuff) but it's a bit like finding gold sometimes - there's a fair bit of dirt to go through!!

Hopefully I can help others to find what they need in the way of good quality Camp Ovens & cooking gear from here in Australia. (
BTW my background pic is taken at the eastern edge of the Nundle State forest looking NW toward Tamworth. I was up there with my grandson Zak when we were looking for crystals and Pine mushrooms.)

My wife and I have jobs that allows us to travel a fair bit of this beautiful country and we have camped out in all kinds of outfits - tents, camper trailer, caravan, motorhome and the back of our old Rodeo & Troopie. We love to cook outdoors, sometimes  out of convenience (we'll ignore the blowies!) and other times out of necessity.

Over the coming weeks & months, I will be updating the pages as we explore the history of Camp Ovens in Australia; different manufacturers/suppliers & types of Camp Ovens; how to care for your Camp Oven; the accessories that are used; how to select a good oven; other camp cooking gear; events centred on Camp Oven cooking; and of course tried and tasted Camp Oven recipes (some with an Aussie twist).

On the next page, we'll have a brief look at how the Camp Oven came to be and the different types. I'll write about the camp ovens that I have run into over the years, like the
Metters, Furphy, Lodge and others but of course some readers and avid collectors of camp ovens, will be able to recount many, many others.

Well that's the end of my opening spiel and on with the other.
